Dear Families of the Annunciation Catholic School,

My heart goes out to all of you as we process the devastating news of the recent shooting in Minnesota. The events that unfolded are beyond comprehension, and it’s okay to feel a mix of shock, fear, sadness, and anger. This is a time to lean on one another and to remember that we are a community—a safe space for our children and for each other.

Our children look to us for guidance and reassurance. Here are some ways we can all help our families and ourselves cope:

  • Talk About It, But Keep It Simple: It's important to talk to your children about what happened, but use age-appropriate language. For younger kids, stick to the basics and reassure them that they are safe. For older kids and teens, encourage them to ask questions and share their feelings. Acknowledge their fears and let them know that their feelings are valid.

  • Limit Media Exposure: Constant news coverage can be overwhelming and re-traumatizing for both children and adults. Try to limit your family's exposure to news reports and graphic images.

  • Maintain Routine: In times of crisis, a predictable routine can provide a sense of stability and security. Try to stick to your family's normal schedule as much as possible.

  • Express Your Feelings: Encourage your family to find healthy ways to express their emotions. This could be through drawing, writing, playing, or talking with a trusted adult.

  • Focus on Hope and Community: Remind your children of the good in the world. Talk about the first responders, the community members who are helping, and the resilience of the human spirit. Let's show our children that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and people who care. Here at The Hive Social Garden, we are always working to build sustainable, inclusive communities.

  • Take Care of Yourself: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Make sure you are also taking care of your own mental and emotional well-being. Reach out to a friend, a family member, or a professional if you need to talk.

We are all in this together. If you need support, please remember that we are here for you. You can find more information about our community care and educational resources on our website or by contacting our leadership team at magic@thehivesocial.garden. We'll continue to provide resources and support as we navigate this together.

With heartfelt sympathy,
