What’s the Buzz?
Good morning, sunshine! It's always a good idea to have a handle on what's happening in the wider world, as it can often touch our lives in ways we don't expect. Let me pour us a virtual cup of coffee and share what seems to be buzzing in national and global news this week.
It's Monday, May 19th, 2025, so let's see what's brewing that could be relevant for us:
On the Home Front - National News & Your Family's Well-being
Budget Discussions and Potential Cuts to Family Support Programs:
It really sounds like those budget talks in Washington are still front and center, dear. They're looking at some big changes that could affect programs many of us count on. Committees in the House are working on finding ways to reduce spending, and that could mean changes for Medicaid and SNAP (the food stamp program).
For SNAP, they're discussing stricter work requirements. This could mean that parents with children older than 7 might need to meet work rules (it's currently for parents with kids over 18), and the age for adults without dependents who need to work could go up. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that if these changes go through, about 3 million fewer people might get SNAP benefits each month.
When it comes to Medicaid, the same office suggested that proposed changes could lead to around 7.6 million fewer people having health insurance. It's a bit worrying, especially since some states have what they call "trigger laws." If the federal government's share of Medicaid funding drops too much, these states might have to end their Medicaid expansion, and that could affect over 3.6 million folks in those areas.
The TANF program, which helps families with temporary assistance, might also see some cuts, including to a special fund that helps states out when the economy gets tough.
On a brighter note for our little ones, it seems Head Start funding was spared from elimination in a recent budget proposal. That's a relief! However, other important programs are on the chopping block, like one that helps student parents afford childcare (CCAMPIS) and another that helps states improve their early learning systems (Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five).
Health News to Keep in Mind:
This is some potentially good news for older adults and their families: The FDA has just given the okay to the very first blood test that can help doctors diagnose Alzheimer's disease. It's for folks 55 and older who are showing early signs, and it could make getting a diagnosis easier and quicker.
Also on the vaccine front, the FDA has given full approval to Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine, which is a protein-based option (not an mRNA one). This means another choice for people, especially older adults or those with health conditions that put them at higher risk.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is talking about important topics for families this May, like tackling childhood obesity and the importance of spotting Borderline Personality Disorder early on.
I also saw some interesting child health news items: researchers are using AI to predict child malnutrition, there are some new studies raising questions about the safety of long-term ADHD medication for kids, and a reminder that any kind of cyberbullying can be really tough on children. And something that always bears repeating: studies continue to show that physical punishment just has negative outcomes for children.
One more thing from the FDA: they're holding a public meeting on Tuesday, May 20th, with a panel of independent scientists to talk about the safety of talc, which is in a lot of consumer products. It’s always good to be aware of what they're looking into.
Consumer & Economic Updates:
It seems like folks are feeling a bit cautious about the economy. The latest consumer sentiment index for May showed that confidence has dipped for the third month in a row. People's feelings about their current situation, their future expectations, and even their thoughts on the job market are a bit lower than last month and this time last year.
We're seeing some signs of this caution with retailers too. For example, American Eagle Outfitters pulled back on their financial forecasts for the year, mentioning "macro uncertainty" and having too much inventory. Little things like this can give us a sense of the overall mood.
Thinking about summer plans? If you're dreaming of an international trip, Cancun, Mexico, is looking like the top spot for Americans this summer, according to Tripadvisor. But, it also looks like many families (about 79%!) are planning to be pretty budget-conscious because of worries about inflation and the cost of living. So, shorter weekend trips might be more the trend.
Around the World - Global Events with Potential Impact
UNICEF shared some concerning news that the well-being of children in many wealthier countries has taken a hit since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This includes things like their school performance, mental health, and physical health. It seems many kids have fallen behind in basic reading and math skills, which is a real worry for their futures. It just shows how global events can ripple out and affect families everywhere.
Speaking of families, the International Day of Families was just last week on May 15th. The theme for 2025 is all about "Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development". It’s a good reminder of how important it is to support families, both here at home and around the world.
And something that connects us globally is education. The National Education Association (NEA) is continuing its efforts to support immigrant students and is speaking out against federal cuts to education. These kinds of actions remind us how interconnected we are.
Things to Keep on Our Family Radar This Week
May is still buzzing with awareness! It's Mental Health Awareness Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and National Military Appreciation Month. These are all wonderful opportunities to learn something new, have meaningful conversations with our kids, and get involved in our communities.
That FDA meeting about talc safety on Tuesday, May 20th, is definitely something for us parents to keep in the back of our minds when we're thinking about the products we use.
And with summer just around the corner, it's a good time to start thinking about any travel plans, keeping those budget-friendly tips in mind and, of course, making sure any adventures are safe ones.
Jess C's Mom's Two Cents
Honey, if I had to boil it all down, I'd say the big things for us families this week are to keep an ear out for those budget discussions in Washington, especially how they might affect programs that help so many of us with healthcare and basic needs. On the health side, it’s great to see new developments like that Alzheimer's test and another vaccine option, but also important to stay aware of ongoing concerns for our children's well-being.
With the economy sending some mixed signals, being a smart and careful consumer is always a good idea. And, as always, let's not forget the importance of community, looking out for one another, and keeping those conversations about mental health open and honest.
It's a lot to take in, but just being aware helps us make the best decisions for our loved ones and our community. Stay tuned to reliable news sources, and we can always chat more about these things in The Hive!
