October is my favorite month with the exception of September, but that's just because it is my birthday. So many things happen in October, to include the will they won't they drama of the federal budget. Personally, I hope they keep it shut down for once and pass a budget that actually helps us, but more than likely someone will cave or make concessions that no one actually wants.

Last night in a library after hours, a group of moms met to game plan how to solve the problem of gun violence. At that meeting, as the new Virginia State Suicide Prevention Lead for Moms Demand Action, I shared my story of loss and struggle for the first time. I almost didn't do it, but moms show up - and they show out.

So, my final thought for you this week is this: Don't let the big, heavy issues make you feel helpless. Instead, let them inspire you to find the small, meaningful ways you can contribute. Whether it's having a hard conversation with your child, picking up the phone to call your representative, or just checking in on a friend who seems a little down, every small act of care and kindness creates a ripple effect.
